The hotel was for a long time the most significant establishment in the entire region, but after the end of World War II, it was converted into a hospital. After the war, Oberwiesenthal was a restricted area under Russian control until 1955 due to uranium mining. Subsequently, the sports hotel became part of IG Wismut, which used it as a recreational and holiday hotel. Next to the original sports hotel, another accommodation building and a swimming pool were constructed. The hotel was available to the company’s employees and also to national and international guests participating in sports competitions. Coaches, managers, and top athletes who took part in various sporting events for decades trained here.
After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 and the closure of the borders with West Germany, it became the most important winter sports center in the GDR and also a key location for sports education and training, contributing to the development of many outstanding athletes and personalities. However, after the political changes and the sale of the hotel to the Euromill group, its decline began, leading to complete abandonment of the premises from 1994/1995 until 2021.
